Robert “Joe” Halderman, a producer at CBS News’ “48 Hours,” will plead guilty Today for attempting to extort $2 million from Letterman.  Here is a rundown of the case if you are not familiar with it.  Robert Halderman was busted last year, after David Letterman turned him in for trying to extort him.  

Apparently, David was doodling some of his female staff and Robert had the goods on him.  Without considering any payoff from Robert, David turned him in.   It was a shocking news that rocked CBS, to see one of their prominent producers arrested for trying to extort money from David Letterman, CBS’s biggest money maker. 

Halderman will be sentenced to six months in jail, four and a half year of probation, and 1,000 hours of community service. Halderman and his aggressive attorney, Gerald Shargel, claimed that Halderman was merely attempting to sell Letterman a screenplay about the sex scandal.  Another defense his lawyer used was the Rachel Uchitel defense.  Rachel got paid by Tiger Woods for not detailing their affair in the tabloid and Robert felt if Rachel could get paid, why couldn’t he?  

With no more defenses to use, Robert Halderman is taking the deal allotted to him. For Robert, he is going from a producer on a prominent CBS show to jail and potentially hardship finding another gig after his stint in jail.
